B Story, explained
The B Story brings in the relationship, mentor, rival, or secondary thread that helps carry the theme.
What the B Story beat is
The B Story is often a love story, friendship, mentorship, rivalry, or emotional mirror. It is where the theme becomes interpersonal.
What it does for the story
It gives the protagonist a different kind of pressure from the external plot. The A story asks what they can do; the B story asks who they are becoming.
Common mistakes
The B Story weakens when it is decorative. If removing it does not alter the protagonist’s internal change, it is not doing enough.
The B Story is the human channel through which the theme keeps returning.
Example
In many detective stories, the partner or client relationship forces the detective to confront the personal cost of their methods.
How to write it
Introduce a relationship that tests the protagonist’s flaw. Let this thread create choices, not just commentary.
